Environmental team

The environmental team is a student-led organisation that focuses on promoting environmental sustainability within the school. In 2011, the NSW Department of Education and Communities recognised Blakehurst High School's success with the Sydney Region Award of Excellence for Learning for Sustainability.

Each year we participate in Clean up Australia Day and carry out a Green Day to raise funds for environmental team projects as well as raise awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.

The environmental team provides an opportunity for students to attend inter-school events to improve their understanding of how we can protect the environment at an individual and school level.

Projects have included:

  • installation of three chilled water fountains and introduction of school reusable drink bottles
  • Year 7 graffiti bin project where students painted bins to beautify the school
  • flick off Friday – switching off all electrical appliances at the switch every Friday afternoon
  • entering video competitions that promote environmental sustainability such as ‘Shout out for climate change' and ‘enviro inspiro!'

Membership in the environmental team is open to all students of all years. Committing to regular meetings and actively taking part in projects are the requirements for membership.

Meetings are currently held weekly at recess on Tuesday in Room 4. We also utilise Edmodo as an online communication tool between meetings.
