In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.
Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.
Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.
The creative and performing arts faculty at Blakehurst High School seeks to enrich, support and nurture our students' lifelong learning by educating their minds and fostering a sense of creativity. The music, visual arts and drama departments offer an extensive range of disciplines supported by a dynamic team of specialist teaching staff.
The music faculty, comprising 2 specialist staff members, delivers engaging programs for students in Years 7 - 12.
The BHS music program supports, encourages and enhances individual, classroom and ensemble musicianship. At Blakehurst High School we seek to nourish the musical interest that is present in every student. This is achieved through the development of a student's awareness and response to music, as well as through expression and knowledge of music.
The visual arts faculty, comprising 4 specialist staff members, delivers engaging programs in the visual arts, visual design and photography for students in Years 7 - 12.
Students develop an understanding of the visual arts through expression in a variety of mediums, including ceramics and sculpture, design, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, visual communication and multimedia.
The Drama faculty provides engaging programs for students in elective Drama in Years 9-12.
The study of drama connects students to their own creative processes and provides opportunities for them to imagine themselves as others, exploring beliefs, feelings, behaviours and relationships across diverse situations.
Our Drama students develop knowledge, understanding and skills in such areas as scriptwriting, directing, sound and lighting operation, and of course, acting within a rich and exciting range of topic areas complemented by co-curricular experiences.
The collaborative nature of Drama provides students with opportunities to learn and manage the interpersonal and intra-personal skills required to work effectively, both individually and in groups.
